Prepare to descend into a cursed castle of brutal combat, digitized sprites, and unsettling mysteries. Award-winning filmmaker Charles Davis and his studio, Chunkle Freaky's Movies Games, have officially announced that the surreal 2D action-platformer Obey the Insect God will be unleashed upon the world on April 10, 2026.
A Return to the Era of Digitized Carnage
Drawing heavy inspiration from the infamous era of late-90s digitized arcade fighters, Obey the Insect God offers a visual style rarely seen in the modern indie landscape. The game’s characters are brought to life through live-action footage of Davis and other actors, creating an uncanny and nostalgic aesthetic that feels both retro and uniquely disturbing.
Mythic Mystery in a Digital Lair
The game’s narrative is as strange as its visuals. Inspired by the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala, the story unfolds through live actors and full voice acting. Players are dropped into a sprawling, interconnected labyrinth of over two dozen zones, where cryptic puzzles and powerful enemies stand between them and the truth of "His Holiness."
Unlike traditional "Metroidvanias" that gate progress behind found items, Obey the Insect God empowers the player from the start. With most traversal abilities available immediately, you are free to explore the surrealistic lair as you see fit—though survival is another matter entirely.
Master the Combo
The combat is designed to be fast and punishing. Players must master tight timing, perfect blocks, and devastating combos to overcome the lair’s inhabitants. Armed with various weapons, including the newly revealed Power Sword, you’ll face off against towering, brutal bosses in a fight for survival where the atmosphere only gets stranger the deeper you descend.
Founded originally for indie film projects, New Jersey-based Chunkle Freaky's Movies Games makes its video game debut with this project, blending cinematic storytelling with hardcore platforming.
The lair opens on April 10th. You can wishlist Obey the Insect God on Steam now.
