Leamington Spa-based publisher Kwalee and independent developer Malformation Games have officially announced the release date for their highly anticipated survival horror title, Ground Zero. Players will be able to descend into the haunting, ruined streets of Busan, South Korea, when the game launches on April 16, 2026, for PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Set two months after a cataclysmic meteor impact reduced South Korea to a wasteland, the story follows an elite Korean operative and her Canadian partner as they investigate the settling dust and supernatural lightning storms. What they discover in the fog is a nation transformed; the impact has mutated all remaining life into grotesque, monstrous threats that lurk within the city's temples and urban centers.

A Tribute to the Golden Era

Ground Zero is a love letter to the classic survival horror sensibilities of the 1990s. The game utilizes fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds to build tension, complemented by intricate puzzles and optional "tank" controls for those seeking a truly nostalgic experience.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

While the aesthetics lean into the past, the combat is designed for modern precision. As a trained soldier, protagonist Seo-Yeon can shoot, stab, and utilize martial arts to counter enemies. The game rewards "cleaner kills" with Genome Points, a currency that can be traded for vital gear upgrades to help survive the increasingly terrifying boss encounters hidden in the heart of Busan.

Beyond the Main Story

Kwalee has confirmed that the experience extends beyond the initial credits. Players can look forward to:

Unlockable Content: Including alternate outfits and hidden endings.

Additional Modes: Extra challenges for those who master the core mechanics.

Custom Difficulty: Tailoring the horror to suit both newcomers and genre veterans.

Founded by industry icon David Darling CBE, Kwalee continues to expand its diverse portfolio with this atmospheric addition. For fans of classic horror, Ground Zero promises a brutal, stylish, and deeply atmospheric return to the roots of the genre.
