SEGA has officially launched the "Sonic Speed Circuit," a unique 10km running route mapped out in the exact shape of Sonic the Hedgehog, to celebrate the iconic gaming character’s 35th anniversary. Situated in Shoreditch, London, the initiative combines fitness and public art, running throughout the month of June.
The interactive campaign launches on the heels of new consumer research revealing that nearly half of millennials—the first generation to grow up playing the classic franchise—go for a run at least once a week. Furthermore, Londoners were identified as the most likely demographic to participate in running clubs. Interestingly, a fifth of millennial respondents named the Blue Blur as their ultimate fictional running partner, outranking other speed-centric pop culture figures such as The Flash, Road Runner, and Quicksilver.
The 10km circuit begins at Ebor Street and guides runners past seven vibrant, bespoke street murals tracking through the Shoreditch area. SEGA commissioned a prominent lineup of illustrators, known for their work with Disney, Marvel, Netflix, and Pixar, to reimagine Sonic in their own distinct creative styles. For those looking for a lighter pace, a shorter 500m walking route has been established to allow fans to view the public artwork without completing the full distance.
Jamie Turner, Head of Brand Marketing and Partnerships at SEGA, noted that Sonic has always stood for speed, energy, and adventure. Turner explained that the 35th anniversary presented the perfect opportunity to unite the gaming community through fitness, creative street art, and playful gamification.
To incentivize participants, SEGA is offering exclusive anniversary merchandise—including customized running socks, water bottles, commemorative pin badges, and limited-edition art prints—to runners who complete the circuit during June. The initiative aims to tap into the 38 percent of British runners who state that earning tangible rewards encourages them to exercise more frequently. Fans can officially log their progress and participate in the community by joining the dedicated Sonic Speed Circuit run club via the Strava tracking application.
